Artist statement

My work explores small, intricate moments of beauty found in nature and everyday life through abstract, organic forms. I am often inspired by mundane observations that may seem otherworldly when viewed in isolation like a rainbow oil spill pooling on a driveway, a colorful mold growing in a petri dish, or an orchid’s petals casting a unique shadow.

Although inspired by observation, my work serves as a brief escape from reality by delving into unknown realms through vessels of organic form and color. Utilizing a variety of mediums, primarily painting and mixed media, I strive to portray whimsical moments and locations, untouched and unexplored by man. Through these dream-like compositions, I hope to create a sanctuary, a place to rediscover childlike curiosity in the presence of the unknown.

artist biography

Abi Bruno is a visual artist from Chicago, Illinois, working primarily in painting and mixed media. She is currently pursuing a BA in Studio Arts and Technology with a concentration in 2D Extended Media at Purdue University. Though her artistic interest began in childhood, an early struggle with perfectionism temporarily dampened her passion for art. However, during the pandemic, Bruno rediscovered her love for visual expression, particularly painting. Through patience and unlearning, she has since transformed this desire for perfection into a driving force for experimentation and growth.

Bruno's abstract work draws inspiration from nature, emphasizing color and form as the central elements of her artistic language rather than as tools for representation. Her creative journey is deeply influenced by her study of contemporary art history, particularly the works of Yves Klein. Reflecting on Klein's iconic blue pigment, she often recalls his words: “Color is sensitivity in material form, substance in its purest form.” This philosophy resonates throughout Bruno's practice, fueling her exploration of color as both subject and medium.
